Newsvine is Coming

Mike Davidson has finally given some details on the work he has been doing lately and it sounds very interesting:

Newsvine is a large-scale news media site which gives you almost all the same stories you read on sites like MSNBC and CNN but presents them in a much more attractive package. Attractive not just in looks but in function as well. At Newsvine, we feel strongly that an article’s life only begins the second it is published. It is only when readers interact with it that it achieves its full impact.

Some quick points:

  • news stories from elsewhere can be added to Newsvine via a browser bookmarklet
  • news stories can be tagged and this tagging is reflected in the URL structure
  • users can vote for a story to increase its importance (similar to Digg I guess)
  • users can comment on news stories and chat with other users about a particular news story
  • users can sign up for a free Newsvine account and write a column themselves (quite interesting)
  • users get the advertising earning associated with their pages (this should ensure a variety of contributors)

At the moment, their asking for people to sign up for the private beta (bet you didn’t see that coming) but, hopefully it won’t be too long before it’s open to the public.
