The New Freight Family
I heard Joshua Darden speak at SXSW this past February and I was very impressed with him. He is passionate about type and it shows through in the way he talks about it. His passion can also be seen in his newly released Freight type family—a 60 member family!
Type design is a very difficult profession—it can take years to create a good type family—and, to the average user, fonts are something that come with your computer or are downloaded for free. I can’t image the amount of work that goes into producing a 60 member type family, but I imagine it will take a long time for him to receive a full return on his investment, if it happens at all.
Then again, I get the impression that, for him, the creation of the family is the cake and any money gained is the icing.
