The Work of Thomas Campbell

I just finished watching “The Seedling“, a 1999 surf film by Thomas Campbell. It’s a great film with lots of moody cinematography and a smooth soundtrack. The surfing is almost all longboarding and it looks so elegant—basically, it’s the exact opposite of what I look like on a board.

The soundtrack includes the jazz-influenced styling of Tommy Guerrero, a guy I grew up seeing in Thrasher Magazine and watching in Powell skate vids (see 1989’s ‘Ban This‘ for an incredible high-speed sequence with Tommy). Now, he crops up in my playlist from time to time. Interestingly, his music is available through Galaxia, Thomas Campbell’s record label. Galaxia also sells the work of Ray Barbee, another Powell skater from back in the day.

Thomas Campbell is also an incredible artist, producing all kinds of colourful, fun work. I was lucky enough to see some of his stuff during the ‘Beautiful Losers‘ exhibit at the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts in San Francisco and he was also featured in Volume 13, No 4 of ‘The Surfers Journal”. One day I would love to own one of his photographs.

  4. Hi Malorie,

I’m not Thomas, I’m just a fan of his. There doesn’t seem to be much of his stuff available online, unfotunately. One option would be to contact the Surf Gallery in Laguna Beach and see if they have anything available.
